Training

roads280Sloan Construction Company continuously works to improve the abilities of its employees through various training programs. The Roads Academy program slogan is “Building Better Roads & Bridges… One Employee at a Time.”

The main intent of the programs is to “train and crosstrain employees to limit the turnover rate, retain employees and encourage performance with a commitment to excellence.” – Kevin Reed, Upstate Regional Manager

This is training for our employees who are in supervisory positions, and are designed to teach engineers, project managers, and administrative employees about other parts of Sloan’s business. Each course runs for one to two days per session and are taught by employees who are experts in their respective areas.

The courses cover topics such as asphalt laydown, plant operations, estimating, project management, bridge building, human resources, risk management, quality assurance and financial reporting.

Lead by Sloan’s Training Specialist, Danny Doetch, PAC provides classroom & hands-on opportunities for paving operations personnel to expand their job knowledge and be exposed to other areas of the operations outside of their current responsibilities. During the paving season, the principals learned in the previous winter’s PAC training are expanded with field crosstraining to provide opportunities for continuous growth and advancement.

A much more involved training program, LEAP is a six-year program in which four employees, who have shown leadership potential and are selected through an application and interview process, can transition into a leadership role within the company. Participants will go through all the EDP and PAC programs in their first year of the program and perform two-week job rotations two times per year, in order to maximize their crosstraining, on top of performing their other duties as normal.

This huge commitment pays off for LEAP participants, as sticking with the program for the six-year term will earn them a significant bonus at the end of the sixth year.
