The South Carolina Asphalt Pavement Association recently honored winners of the 2015 SCAPA Quality Pavement Awards Program during the 2016 SCAPA Winter Conference at the Embassy Suites in Columbia, SC. Seventeen projects were submitted this year; a mix of interstate, highway, secondary roads and private work across SC were sent in for consideration. This year, in addition to the Quality Pavement Awards, new categories were added to allow applicants to highlight the adaptability and sustainability of asphalt pavements, as well as the methods to expedite project delivery.
The Green Construction Award was created to highlight projects which use sustainable materials and practices, including but not limited to: reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), recycled asphalt shingles (RAS), warm mix asphalt (WMA), ground tire rubber (GTR), porous asphalt pavements and other environmentally friendly practices. Sloan Construction and SCDOT District 4 were the 2015 Green Construction Award winners for their efforts and dedication to sustainability on Interstate 85 in Cherokee and Spartanburg Counties. Sloan Construction placed their asphalt mix using warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology, and also recycled a large portion of the existing roadway and reused it as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP).
